Horses demand more than just a casual feeding and brushing. Just ask any horse owner or veterinarian and they will quickly tell you that these animals require a great deal of care and patience. The upkeep and maintenance for large animals can be overwhelming if you do not make them part of your daily routine. Here are 7 Simple horse grooming tips that any horse lover will find helpful.

Cleaning the hooves of your horse is one of your main duties. Hoof picks are inexpensive and these should always be a tool that you have on hand. You can routinely check the hooves of a horse every day and use this to dislodge any small pebbles or other debris that is found. These types of things can ruin the hooves and feet of these animals. If you do not clean the hooves regularly it can create a painful situation for your horse, and you run the risk of the animal going lame or becoming victim to infections.

Making sure to wash and clean the face of a horse after a ride or other exercise is necessary in order to prevent hair loss and infections that can occur from fungal infections. Dampness, moisture and sweat can damage the coat of your horse, and sometimes the face of the animal is forgotten. Instead of using the rigid sweat scrapers to remove water from the hips and legs of a horse, you should use the Squeegees that are made specifically for horses. This is more comfortable for the animal and it really does a better job. Using these products can also help you avoid scraping away bits of hair from the animals body.

Use a sponge to clean different areas on your horse. Keep these separate and do not use the same sponge on the dock that is used for the face. If you remember to keep the sponges separated you will prevent cross contamination of bacteria and other microbes from one area to another.

A horse’s tail is a lot like a girl’s ponytail and should be washed, conditioned, and detangled weekly. Brushing should occur daily if possible in addition to the weekly tasks listed above. If you would like, you may utilize a tail bag to keep the tail protected and detangled, but you must be sure to tie the bag below the horse’s tail bone. If you manage the tail on a daily basis, you will prevent snarls and sores from developing and you will also have a happier horse.

If your horse has a coat that is a darker shade, it is important to keep your horse out of the bright sun when he’s not participating in activities. Therefore, you must provide some much needed shade. This will help to prevent their coat from fading or changing colors. Also, after a sweat ride or exercise activity, you should rinse your horse off with water before sending him out into the sun again. The salt in the sweat could increase the rate of the fading process. However, a simple rinsing could prevent this from happening.

Remember, that while bathing your horse is a good grooming practice, you must be careful. If you bathe him too much, you could create a coat that is dull and lacking in luster. You should at most bathe your horse with soap and shampoo once a week.

Using a spray made for coat polishing should be done after you have bathed your horse. When you use this product it will make the coat shine and it prevents dust from adhering to the hairs. Less dust means a healthier coat on your horse and decreases the risk of skin infections and allergies.

If you follow these 7 tips for grooming your horse, your horse will be happy, healthy, and beautiful.

People all over the world regard their animals as family members. They could keep small creatures, or 100 pound Labs. These pets can expect the same treatment as their human companions; even down to their pet health care plan.

According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association, Americans spent roughly $10.1 billion for pet health care in 2007 ” a 40 percent increase from 2006. The insurance industry isn’t ignoring these numbers. Jack Stephens, founder of Pet’s Best Insurance, says that Americans spend roughly $250 million annually on pet insurance. That figure is expected to increase to $1 billion by 2011, he says. That makes pet insurance one of the fastest growing insurance lines.

These pet insurance plans can be very straightforward or complicated, depending on your needs. While most often taken out on the family dog or cat, they are available for almost all pets and livestock.

Like any insurance, you don’t know when you’re going to need it. Unfortunately with pets, if they end up having surgery the costs can spiral so quickly. Equally, pedigree dogs are more prone to certain conditions.

In recent months, the ASPCA has noticed a significant increase in the number of people calling it who simply cannot afford the routine vet care that their animal requires.

Generally, pet health insurance cover bills due to injuries and illnesses. They also cover preventative care and vaccinations. Some plans will also cover a portion of obedience training costs and flea/tick medications.

These plans also cover micro chipping to help locate a lost pet and some will even cover the cost of advertising and rewards to help locate your lost pet. Some even offer travel reimbursement if a trip is cut short due to a pet related cancellation.

When selecting a policy, it is vital that pet owners check the terms and conditions that apply, rather than being swayed simply by price.

Pet health insurance is becoming more common every day. It’s a great feeling knowing that your pet will be taken care of no matter what sort of emergency comes up.

Making a choice between expensive health care for a pet or ending the life of that animal companion is never easy. Wallace Sife, who as founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement has counseled hundreds of guilt-racked pet owners, said, “There is no right answer.”

This means there is no hard or fast rule when your pet needs sudden care. Will it can not take away the trauma of the situation, a pet insurance plan can be the financial cure and ultimately make the emotional decision a bit easier.

These are some of the basics of pet insurance plans. There will still be some more research to do when choosing the right plan for your needs. This is often as simple as a web search for companies websites to compare the different plans and coverages. It’s important not to get hung up on price as your sole shopping criteria. The cheapest plan may not necessarily be the best deal. Ultimately, you want to be sure that your pet will be provided with the best care should there ever be a need. This will keep you both happy for many years to come.

The dog GPS has a number of advantages over the manual dog tracker. The manual dog tracker consists of a simple collar on which is written, important tracking information including name of dog, owner’s address and relevant contact information. But in a situation where the wonders away from residential areas so that people can not see it, the manual dog tracker can not do any thing.

The dog GPS often sends alerts to the dog owner indicating the particular location of the dog from time to time. It includes an LCD screen which displays information about your dog’s location, direction and velocity. It does not require installation and it can track up to three dogs at a time.

The Gamin astro does not also use GSM modem. Information from your dog is transmitted via radio signals. It consists of a hand - held colour screen GPS device and a transmitter referred to as DC 20. The device is first activated by taking both the hand- held and the transmitter out doors and turning them on to acquire GPS signals from the satellite. The DC 20 can then be attached to the dog. This system can track as much as 10 dogs simultaneously.

The GPS technology has found application not only in tracking of dogs; it can also be used to track vehicles, animals and human beings including children.

In the United States, each year an average of 8,000 people receive snake bites from venomous snakes. Some of these people are bitten from the result of not being able to identify the snake, while some others are bitten for the result of identifying the snake incorrectly and getting close to it thinking that it is safe to do so. Even the ‘harmless’, non-venomous snakes can cause a severe infection or an allergic reaction in many people.

If ever bitten by a venomous snake, most doctors give you antivenin, an antidote to cure snake bites, to treat a serious snake bite. Each antivenin is created in a horse’s blood serum when the horse is injected with snake venom. So they won’t just give you any snake venom, for if it is not from the right kind of snake it can be like giving you poison. They will give you the venom for the kind of snake that bit you. So what if you don’t know what kind of snake bit you? Well they normally have ways of finding that out, by the description of the snake or from the symptoms you have of the venom, but not all the time. For this reason it would be very useful to know your snakes.

For those who live on or near woody lands, swamps, or any source of water, it would be very good to know your snakes backwards and forward. Even the people who hunt, fish, hike, camp, and do other outdoor things. Knowing your snakes is really important. If you are any of these people above then take the time to learn all the snakes in your area or at least learn the basic features to tell the venomous and the non-venomous apart. For the one’s that don’t won’t to take the time at all, when you see a snake, do like some people would do and just run as fast as you can. This may save you from being bitten.

All you you really have to know about snakes to identify them is listed below:

1. body length - this is can be very useful if the snake is fully grown

2. body shape- this is a very effective way of identifying most snakes especially water snakes and water moccasins

3. head & neck shape - this is can be used to identify any snake and some times tell the venomous apart from the non-venomous

4. color & pattern - very effective to identify a snake with, it can be hard if the snake is shedding its skin or if the snake is a small snake

5. scale texture - if you can see the scales this can be useful, but you may have to get closer to the see to see it. I don’t recommend this way

6. eye pupil shape- this is probably the best way to tell the venomous and non-venomous snakes apart. If you can’t do this without getting close then forget this method

Now to summarize all I have written in a few words, KNOW YOUR SNAKES.

If you have flea bites and start to run a fever, it is very important that you contact your doctor immediately.

These tools are used in a sealed room, and blast the entire chamber in chemicals that are lethal to fleas. A flea bite has many characteristics. Use of repellents and giving your pet flea medication can help lower the number of bites that you, your family and your pets have to endure. When you suffer a flea bite, you run the risk of picking up a disease from the flea. As a flea bite can pose an allergy risk to some people, scientists have developed several methods that can be used to quickly eliminate fleas.

It is because they can change hosts that they pose so many problems. Like many parasites, fleas carry remnants of the blood of previous hosts in them. A popular method is through the use of flea bombs or foggers. They are small, and often tend to be red. In many instances, a flea bite will only cause discomfort and itching that can linger for up to two weeks.

The normal bite will take up to two weeks to heal, and does not need doctor’s attention unless the wounds become infected. Fleas are parasitic insects, feeding off of the blood of its host for nourishment. This is due to the substance in the saliva of a flea that allows them to bite through the skin. This allows them to change hosts almost at will. However, these chemicals are also toxic to humans, so they should be used with caution and care.

This is one of the reasons that it is recommended that you address a flea infestation as quickly as possible. When you are bit by a flea, it is important that you begin treating your home against infestation. This causes the wound to itch. Often, there will be several bites in a line, where the flea has changed its feeding ground. Nonetheless, there are consequences of getting bitten that many people do not consider.

The sooner a flea problem is addressed, the less risk you run of picking up a disease from them. While they cannot fly, fleas are one of the worlds best jumpers, able to travel distances that far exceeds their body size. If you have suffered from a flea bite, you know how irritating and painful they can be. These bites can cause diseases, as well as minor to severe allergic reactions.

“When is a puppy fully grown?”

That is probably not a question that is foremost in your thoughts when you bring a new puppy into your life. That precious little face, those huge soulful eyes, and that cute wiggle in his walk are what come to mind when thinking about your new puppy. But eventually, as your puppy gets older and probably somewhat destructive, you may find yourself wishing that he would grow out of some of those youthful traits and begin acting more like an adult. By the time he’s chewed your third pair of designer shoes you’ll probably begin to wonder…

“When will this puppy be fully grown?”

Although there are some similarities between early development stages of canine babies and human babies, the development process is much quicker for dogs.

Newborn puppies go through many changes during their first three weeks . They open their eyes, start to walk, and begin to act like a little dog. During this early stage they are not aware of much of the world beyond “mom” and their siblings.

Somewhere between the third and fourth week, your puppy’s senses of sight, smell, and hearing rapidly develop. All of a sudden he’ll discover that there is more to his world than just his canine family. His relationship with his new human family begins to take shape. This is a critical time for the development of your puppy’s personality and behavioral traits. Take care to avoid stressful or traumatic experiences as they may significantly influence how your dog will behave as an adult.

Your puppy will begin learning proper pack “etiquette” during the fifth through seventh weeks. If he begins to bite inappropriately or play too rough, his mother will correct him. These early lessons provide some of the social skills he will need as he interacts with humans and other dogs.

During the first three months your puppy will experience many new things. Whenever possible, try to make these learning experiences positive for the pup. In so doing you are much more likely to avoid behavior problems as he enters adulthood.

After about three months your puppy enters his “toddler” stage of development. He gains more independence and explores his world as he sees fit, not at the prompting of his mother or his human family. Shoes, furniture, books, and just about anything within reach will fascinate him. He will also learn what they taste like when he begins teething. This is a good time to begin very basic obedience training and establish yourself as pack leader.

Your puppy will reach adolescence at around six to eight months, well on his way toward adulthood. Although the transition from adolescent to adult varies, depending upon the breed (or mix of breeds), you can be pretty sure that he has reached adulthood by the time his second birthday rolls around.

That’s when a puppy is fully grown.

Horse riding on a trail ride is one of the most pleasurable things you can do to enjoy the great outdoors, but horses are not all the same. I discovered that the Paso Fino horse breed is one of the best horses to take out riding. The smoothness of its ride is enjoyable to a level that could be compared to eating ice cream on a hot summer day as a young child. There is a feeling of elation when experience this horse, and it is due to the fact that it has such a steady gait.

Just in case you’re wondering, a horse’s gait is a way that a horse moves. It is a pattern of movement and how it moves its legs. The Paso Fino has a unique characteristic that makes it different from many other horses. The pattern of its gait has an even cadence and is very smooth. There is not a lot of up-and-down motion when the rider rides it. This makes for a great trail ride.

The distinctive cadence of the Paso’s 1-2-3-4 step pattern gives riders a gliding-ly smooth ride as the horse almost seems to float to its destination. Once you ride one, you will know what I mean.

Called an “ambling” gait, the Paso’s gait is a intermediate gait that is faster than a walk but slower than a canter. As its feet move, you will see that they move in what is called a “lateral” motion where the front and hind hooves move in sequence to one another.

In the Paso Fino gait, there are names for the 3 speeds to its ambling gait. Listed from slowest to fastest, there is the paso fino, paso corto, and paso largo. There is also another one called the Paso Llano and is found in the Peruvian Paso.

There are many competitions that demonstrates the excellence in Paso Fino horse training. In competition, performance Paso Finos are much more animated in their leg motions and much faster while keeping their 4-beat gait. It is really a sight to see. To many, the gait looks like a well orchestrated hat dance by the horse… and I guess you could say that is true. All I can say is simply amazing.

Even if you’re not looking to get started with a performance Paso Fino and are just looking for a good riding horse, the Paso Fino makes an excellent horse to buy and enjoy it for your own pleasure. If you like to go on trial rides, you can’t beat the beautifully smooth and steady horse gait of this horse breed. Have fun and go ride a Paso!

German breeders thought of creating a much faster and much more versatile gundog and so the German Shorthaired Pointer was born. This dog was bred from the lines of the old Spanish Pointer, Hounds of St. Hubert, Foxhound, the English Pointer and some other hound breeds. As a result of this development, the GSP came out faster and excellent in hunting.

The GSP can practically perform all the roles of an excellent gundog. It can perform tasks of a pointer, a retriever, upland bird dog and water dog. As a good hunting companion, the GSP should manifest keen intelligence, boldness, obedience and quickness and a lack of these characteristic implicates improper training from the owner.

Ranked as 17th in Stanley Cohen’s The Intelligence of Dogs, the GSP is unarguably one of the best dogs to rely on. The GSP has such a high hunting instinct that it should be trained early on to avoid other animals that are not considered preys. If not, it will come home bearing a dead cat, bird or rat in its mouth as a trophy of its own hunting expedition.

Many hunters today still utilize the skills of the GSP because it is unarguably excellent in hunting. Hunters love it that the GSP is very dependable, hardy, full of energy and intelligent during these times. One should realize that a properly trained GSP never suggests a disposition of fear, shyness, over submissiveness, lack of docility or aggression.

Aside from being a commendable gundog, the GSP is also outstanding as a family pet. Around the family, this dog is loyal, devoted, obedient, sociable and protective. It loves to play with children and likes to be surrounded by humans and other kinds of dogs.

The body of the GSP manifests a powerful and agile capability because of its streamlined and lean physique. Its uniquely built hind legs are so powerful it allows him to turn quickly and rapidly. It has floppy and moderately long ears and a snout that is broad and powerful that allows him to carry heavy game.

It is a must for the GSP to be docked (unless it is banned in the country) and thus its tail is only long enough to give a wag or a subtle wave. The coat is double layered and is short and flat. The inner coat is dense while the outer coat is stiff which serves as a repellant against water.

Generally, the GSP is found in colors of dark brown, chocolate or chestnut (liver), black and white. Some dogs may come out in solid colors and some may come out with sprinkles or patches of other shades all over their bodies. This color formation of the GSP allows it to camouflage with the woods and bushes especially during winter season.

It’s amazing how one can take a video, post it in the web, and have hundreds of thousands of people (if your popular enough) see it by the end of the day. Many seem to think that if you have a video camera and a cute enough dog - you can produce, direct, and even star in your own animal training video. Theres nothing wrong with that. But out of the thousands of dog training videos in the market today, how will you separate the best from the pack?

First of all, the recorded clip should be of excellent quality-visual and sound elements play a major part in the watchability of the tutorial. It must also have a point of view successfully conveyed by the producers. Focus and organization is integral in achieving that. Off tangent topics should be edited out and a theme that ties the whole presentation together will make it neat and easy on the eyes to watch.

Who is the spokesperson on the tape? Many times producers use well known celebrities to lend brand recall to their products. However, with services that require special expertise like dog training videos, licensed trainers are usually used. The public want to get information from the best source possible. Besides that this is their actual profession, these people are credible and in possession of valuable inside information and tips people can use. It may not be worth your dollars to see a Regular Joe teach on something that might be interesting but untested.

A successful dog training DVD out in the market would have a great deal attached to it. Instead of selling a single $20 video; you will find it packaged with special gifts like some related literature (valued at $xx) and a basic starter kit (valued at $xx) of some sort given for ‘free’ at only $40. People will be drawn more to the latter offer. It doesn’t guarantee the product of course but value added to the paying customers is appreciated and be received better.

Good products are marketed well. Sure there is this wonderful canine instructional video out, but if nobody knows about it who will buy it? Endorsements and recommendations from industry experts like vets, national animal organizations, certified colleagues will create a huge buzz within certain circles that will ripple out into public consciousness. Besides that, co-branding and tie-ups with strategic companies are great corporate strategies that get some awareness on a really good product.

In connection to the previous paragraph, marketing should be properly transitioned to well-planned distribution channels. Reliable and reputable specialty dog sites that have stocks of the video for selling implies that it is a superb product.

Finally, the best indication of success is the clamor for the product itself. How fast it flies off the virtual shelves means only one thing, a good dog training video has been made. Most people can press the record button; but it takes sincere, concentrated effort to produce and release a proper video for public consumption. If you get your hands on a much talked about, often sold out training DVD, you know it is well worth your dollars.
